76 miles and 1 hours and 13 min after leaving Coeur D' Alene, Idaho, there was so much smoke coming out from under the hood of the moving truck and had to pull over on the highway at the small top mountain town of Haugan, Montana. It was about 5:00 in the evening. Dick tried to start it after turning it off but it didnt start. I went to the tavern across the highway to get help. The bartender was happy to call the U-Haul person for help I had asked for. I went back to the truck to tell Dick that she had called for help. She said it would be about 2 hours since the help was coming from Missoula, Montana. We were unable to use our Blackberry pagers due to lack of coverage on the mountain. When I got into the truck to wait even the smoke odor was so very bad and I noticed our dog Kelly was shaking so I went to our Explorer in front of the truck to get our cat, Pumba in a crate (pet cage). When I brought Pumba into the truck, Kelly calmed down after sniffing at her. about an hour and half later the bartender came to tell us that repairman was on the way which he did to check the engine and tried to fix it with no success even he left and came back with some new parts. The truck was new at 16,000 miles with automatic transmission. Dick had worn shorts and t-shirt at that time and I was fortunate to have his long jean and sweatshirt in our suv which he changed it before it got colder. We waited for another four hours and we were freezing cold after the battery in our suv went dead. I had realized that I didn't turn off the emergency lights. When the repairman came back again, he brought us some hot cocoa and recharged the battery.
He took Dick and Kelly in his pick-up to brand new motel next to the tavern and I followed them in our suv leaving the moving truck with our little car on the highway. We checked in and went to bed.
