My Mom's Favorite Books

My mom's favorite books

My dad gave me some of my mom's favorite books she had kept for years when Richard and I were down at the lake visiting with him in the summer of 2004. He wanted me to take them so I could remember her. I hope they will be passed among my family in the future. Mom signed her name on some of her books. Dad knew that I was an avid reader. Dad loves reading western books. Mom and Dad had been exchanging books with their friends and later with the used book stores. I was blessed to have Mom because she provided me some books and comic books when I was little that helped me develope language since she knew that I was not allowed to read book at the oral school for the deaf in Spokane until I knew how to speak words and my language was taken away. Bringing my books to school was forbiddened. Why I said that my language was taken away from me....I was not able to speak well and the teachers tried hard to make me speak. American Sign Language was forbidden. Teacher hit our hands with a ruler when they saw us using some signs. Some of my friends who spoke well were in another classes getting their languages while I was not allowed to learn to read and write. When they got older, they passed the Gallaudet College exam which I didn't. I continued reading them at home as I grew. One day my sister in law Carol brought a box of her old books to sell during the yard sale, I looked at them and Mom told me to grab them if I was interested and she would be happy to pay for them for me so I took some. One of them is "Trouble After School" by Jerrold Beim was the first one I read before finishing the other called "Ribbon For Meg" and the rest of the books.
My mom purchased more books I ordered from the public school where I attended and was always buying some for me when I asked for. I had read three books on one weekend when I was sick with Mono in the late 1982's.
I've been reading books during my free time. It's a MUST.
I'm now happy to be back to college to continue my education after moving to Texas. My husband has been encouraging me to start going to college since I was unable to find a job. I am still having problem with my reading comprehension even though I passed the reading Technique course and Nelson Denney test at the college last fall. If I was allowed to read and write at oral school when I was little, I wouldn't have problem when I got older. I WILL NOT give up. I am a fighter.

My mom's book titles in this picture above are:
She Came Back by Patricia Wentworth
Ravensley Manor by Cecily Clark
A Room With Dark Mirrors by Velda Johnston
Michael's Wife by Marlys Millhiser
The Black Opal by Victoria Holt
The Glass Flame by Phyllis A. Whitney
